∂MEM Chuck Dickens$John McCarthy$IBM mass storage system∞
Dear Chuck:
I agree with the considerations in your August 17th memo.
The costs of expanding disk file in my letter are based on their
involving no new technology or training. We have 6 spindles
now at the AI Lab; adding more doesn't even require notifying the users,
and since we already have six, the utilization of an additional spindle
would be high immediately. However, if we were to acquire a mass storage
device, there would indeed be additional costs.
Incidentally, I was aware that I might be going off half-cocked
when I wrote the memo. My excuse was that if I didn't write it
immediately, I knew I never would.
It would be great if enough cost savings could be found to
justify a mass storage without new markets.
